A. S. SENYAVSKY. The Union of the Working Class, Peasantry and Intelligentsia as the Social Base of the USSR

The article discusses socio-class relations in the USSR in the last two decades, the role of the working class, the peasantry and the intelligentsia in the further perfection of the developed socialist society, their participation in the economic and socio-political life of the country. Their cooperation, the author underlines, is the embodiment of the social policy of the CPSU and the Soviet state of the whole people.

A, P. BORODIN. The Third of July Bloc and the Collapse of the Policy of Peaceful Reformation of the Autocracy

While admitting the objective possibility for the tsarism of resolving urgent problems of bourgeois development "from the above", the author investigates the causes which led to the collapse of Stolypin's attempts at reforming the autocracy. He concludes that they were the alignment of forces and contradictions within the bloc itself: its liberal-monarchic wing proved to be powerless as compared with its right wing.

V. A. VARENTSOV. Muscovite Merchants in Novgorod

The author takes as his subject the fate of the Muscovite priviledged merchants moved to Novgorod in the late 15th century. He dwells on their role in Novgorodan self-government system, their foreign-policy and legislative activity, their contribution into the building of Novgorod. His investigations led him to a conclusion on the stability of these families over three or four generations-they formed a specific patriciate group. Its development was interrupted in the early 1580s when they were returned to Moscow while part of the families were exterminated during the raging of oprkhnina in Novgorod in 1570.

N. M. TRAVKINA. Intensification of Militaristic Feelings in the US Congress in the Late 1970s

The author follows the shifts to conservatism that took place in the US legislative power's approach to foreign policy which is done in the context of the Congress discussions of the annual military budgets in the second half of the 70s. The author shows the causes of these shifts and concludes that the US Congress, at the turn of the 80s, actively contributed to the increase of military spendings.

V. N. VINOGRADOV. Rumania in the First World War

The author reveals how the ruling Rumanian circles used the striving of the Rumanian population of the Old Kingdom which was part of the Austria-Hungary at the time to national unification to reach their own foreign-policy ends and to augment the Rumanian territory at the expence of the neighbouring states. The tactics of playing a waiting game in 1914 - 1916 and their openly hostile attitude towards the Soviet state after the victory of the Great October Socialist Revolution of 1917 are also discussed in the article.

E. S. GOLUBTSOVA, G. A. KOSHELENKO. Against Distortions of Ancient History

The authors criticise a group of mathematicians (M. M. Postnikov, A. T. Fomenko. A. S. Mishchenko, E. M. Nikishin) who in their articles forwarded a proposition of applying "new methods of statistical analysis" to the study of ancient history, using as their point of departure N. A. Morosov's conception that the entire ancient and early mediaeval history was an invention of the Renaissance. They support their proposition with a number of principles, dynastic parallelisms, onomstogrammes, revised dating of sources based on the frequency matrix among them. Their ignorance of the factual material, however, led them to a great number of chronological errors, misdating of historical events and historical personalities which in fact divorces history from chronology.
